主人公は、黒人の少年アーノルド・ジャクソン。母の死をきっかけに、兄のウィリスとなくなった母がかつて家政婦をしていた白人の資産家のドラモンド氏の養子となり、ドラモンド氏とその実の娘キンバリーといっしょに暮らすことになる。
モハメド・アリ（ボクシング）、レジー・ジャクソン（プロ野球）、ドロシー・ハミル（フィギュア・スケート）など、各界からの豪華なゲストも話題になった。
ナンシー・レーガン大統領夫人も本人自身の役として登場している(シーズン5 エピソード22 "The Reporter")。
