E・S・ガードナーの傑作推理小説"メイスン・シリーズ"をTV化したもの。
敏腕弁護士ペリー・メイスンが秘書のデラ・ストリート、腕利き調査員ポール・ドレイクの協力を得て、その巧みな法廷戦術で数々の難事件の真相を暴いていく推理サスペンス。
元弁護士のガードナー自身が制作・脚本に関わっている。
ヒッチコックの「裏窓」
など、それまでもっぱら悪役ばかり演じていたレイモンド・バーが本作で一躍脚光を浴びた。レイモンド・バーはこの作品でエミー賞主演男優賞を2回受賞している（1959年、1961年）。
最終回に原作者のE・S・ガードナーが自ら判事役で出演している。
