禁酒法下の1920年代、数々の組織犯罪と闘ったニューヨーク市警特別保安隊の物語。主人公のバーニー・ラディツキー警部は実在の人物で、本シリーズは彼の回顧録に基づく。バーニー本人が技術アドバイザーを務めている。
同時期に「アンタッチャブル」という秀作があったため視聴率的にも振るわなかった。
