当初は「刑事コロンボ」「警部マクロード」「署長マクミラン」と共に「NBCサンデー・ミステリ・ムービー」枠の一編であったが、1977年2月から単独の60分シリーズとなり、8シーズン放映された。
ロサンゼルス郡検死局の検死官（M.E.= Medical Examiner）クインシーが、鋭い観察力と緻密な推理力で数々の犯罪を解決していくクライム・ドラマ。
当時のロサンゼルス郡検死局長でケネディ大統領やマリリン・モンローの検死を担当したトーマス野口がモデル。
