12世紀後半のイギリスを舞台に、父の遺志を継いだロビンがマッチ、ウィル・スカーレット、リトル・ジョン、タック坊、レディ・マリアン、そして刺客から一転ロビンの仲間になったサラセン人のナジ−ル等と徒党を組んでシャーウッドの森に隠れ住みノルマン人の圧政と戦う。
ロビン・フッドという名前は歴史書にも登場するので実在した可能性があるが、その場合でも、一人の人物ではなく、複数の人物の武勇檀がロビン・フッドという英雄物語に昇華したのではないかと考えられている。
