6名のテキサス・レンジャーが無法者キャベンディッシュ一味を追跡中に罠にかかり隊長以下5人が殺害され、隊長の弟リードだけが一命を取り留める。
インディアンのトントの助けを得て体力を回復したリードは、兄の形見のベストから作った黒いマスクを身につけ、自らローン・レンジャーと名乗り、法と正義のために立ち上がる。
※「インディアン」という呼称は差別的であるとして、現在では「ネイティブ・アメリカン」と呼ばれることが多い。
ローン・レンジャーと常に行動を共にするのが、愛馬シルバーとインディアンのトント。
ウィリアム・テル序曲(ロッシーニ）がバックに流れるオープニングは有名。
シーズン2の終了後、クレイトン・ムーアは降板。スタジオ側はギャラの問題だと主張するが本人は否定している。
シーズン3ではジョン・ハートがローン・レンジャーを演じたが、視聴者からは不評でシーズン4からクレイトン・ムーアが復帰した。
ローン・レンジャーの代名詞ともいうべきブラック・マスクはスミソニアン博物館に現在も展示されている。。
