孤児の少年とサラブレッドの心温まる交流の冒険物語。
妻と息子を交通事故で亡くしたジム・ニュートンは立派な野生の馬を捕まえ牧場に連れ帰った。ある日、彼は町で窓ガラスを割ったという濡れ衣を着せられた少年を助ける。その少年には身寄りがなかったので牧場で引き取ることにしたところ、少年と馬はしだいに心を通わせ合うようになった。
番組のスポンサーがソニーだったため、「フューリーとソニー」というタイトルで放映されたこともある。
主人公も本来はジョーイであるがソニーに変更されている。
ヒューリーを演じたハイランド・デール号はとても賢い馬で、あっちへ行かせたりこっちへ行かせたりするのに、ワイヤーで引っ張る必要もなく指図通り的確に動いたという。
当然ギャラも高額で、1話につき1500ドルとさらに番組利益の5％が支払われた。これは、人間のスターよりも多かった。
